What are shaped number plates?
Shaped number plates cover any plate that deviates from the standard 520mm x 111mm rectangle. This includes square rear plates (typically used on 4x4s and imported vehicles), the popular 21" x 6" oversize rear plate for Land Rovers and large SUVs, and other specialty dimensions. Are shaped number plates legal?
Yes — shaped number plates are fully road legal in the UK. The regulations specify character size, font, spacing and material standards, not the overall plate shape or dimensions. Land Rover, Defender, and large SUV owners love the 21" x 6" rear plate. 4x4 owners and imported vehicle drivers often need square rear plates.
