What are hex number plates?

Hex number plates use a unique hexagonal outline instead of the traditional rectangular shape. The angled edges create a sporty, aggressive aesthetic that's become hugely popular with performance car owners. We offer two variants: 'Hex Dynamic' which scales the plate width to match your registration length (1–7 characters), and 'Hex Full' which uses the standard 520mm width. Both are manufactured to BS AU 145e with proper reflective materials and correct character spacing.

Are hex number plates legal?

Yes — hex number plates are fully road legal in the UK provided the characters, font, spacing and reflective materials meet BS AU 145e. The plate shape itself is not restricted by law — only the characters and materials matter. Limitless Plates is a DVLA-registered supplier, so every hex plate we make is fully compliant. Who are they for?

Hex plates are a favourite among performance car enthusiasts — especially popular with owners of hot hatches, sports cars, and modified vehicles. If you want your car to stand out at meets and shows while staying road legal, hex plates are for you.

Care and lifespan

Hex plates require the same minimal care as standard plates. The unique shape doesn't affect durability. Clean with warm soapy water and avoid jet washing at close range. Fit with adhesive pads for a clean look that follows the hex shape.

Frequently asked questions

Are hex number plates road legal?

Yes. The shape of a number plate is not regulated — only the characters, font, spacing, and reflective materials must meet BS AU 145e. Our hex plates are fully compliant and DVLA-approved.

What's the difference between Hex Dynamic and Hex Full?

Hex Dynamic scales the plate width to match your registration length (great for shorter regs), while Hex Full uses the standard 520mm width. Both are road legal.

Can I get hex plates with 3D gel or 4D lettering?

Yes! Hex plates are available with all our lettering styles including standard, 3D gel, 4D acrylic (3mm/5mm), and 4D gel. Mix and match in our plate builder.

Do hex plates fit standard plate brackets?

Hex plates may not fit all standard brackets due to their shape. We recommend using adhesive pads for the cleanest fitment. Fitting guide.

What documents do I need to order?

You'll need proof of identity (driving licence or passport) and proof of entitlement (V5C). We collect these securely after checkout. Full documents guide.

Will a hex plate fit my car?

Hex Dynamic plates are narrower than a standard plate, so they sit inside most recesses and on most brackets. Hex Full is standard width with angled ends. If your car has a deep recess with square corners, choose Hex Full or fit with the adhesive pads we include. Our plate sizes guide has the measurements.

Are hex number plates legal for MOT?

Yes. Shape is not part of the MOT test. The tester checks character size, font, spacing, reflectivity, the BS AU 145e mark and the supplier details, all of which our hex plates carry. Full detail in are hex number plates legal.

How much do hex number plates cost?

From £44.97 a pair with printed characters, with 3D gel and 4D options above that. The price grid on this page shows every combination. Tracked delivery is £3.99.

Do you make hex plates near me?

Every hex plate is cut in our West Yorkshire workshop and posted nationwide, usually next working day. Design it online, upload your V5C and driving licence, and it arrives by tracked post.

Can I have a hex plate on the front and a normal plate on the rear?

Yes. Front and rear plates do not have to match. Many drivers put a hex plate on the front and a full-width plate on the rear where the recess is bigger. See do front and rear plates have to match.
