A complete guide to UK number plate sizes and dimensions. Covers standard, short, square, hex, and motorcycle plates with exact measurements.

UK Number Plate Sizes — Everything You Need to Know

Choosing the right number plate size is essential for both legality and aesthetics. While most vehicles use the standard oblong plate, there are several legal sizes available depending on your vehicle type, registration format, and personal preference.

All sizes must comply with BS AU 145e and be manufactured by a DVLA-registered supplier.

Standard Number Plate Size

The standard UK number plate measures:

  • Width: 520mm (20.5 inches)
  • Height: 111mm (4.4 inches)

This is the most common size and fits the vast majority of UK vehicles. It accommodates all 7-character registration formats (e.g., AB12 CDE) with the correct 11mm character spacing and 33mm group spacing.

All plate styles are available in standard size — standard, 3D gel, 4D, and 4D gel.

Short Number Plates

Short plates (also called "shortened plates") are narrower than standard and are designed for vehicles with fewer characters in their registration. For example, older registrations like "A1 BCD" or personalised plates like "J4 MES" don't need a full 520mm plate.

  • Width: Varies based on character count — typically 410mm to 480mm
  • Height: 111mm (same as standard)

Short plates look cleaner on vehicles with short registrations and are available at Limitless Plates for an additional £4.99. Design a short plate now.

Hex Number Plates

Hex plates feature a distinctive honeycomb-pattern background instead of the standard smooth finish. They're one of the newest trends in the UK number plate market.

  • Size: Same dimensions as standard plates (520x111mm)
  • Legal status: Fully road legal — the hex pattern is in the background material, not the characters
  • Available in: 3D gel, 4D, and 4D gel styles

Hex plates are available at Limitless Plates with a £9.99 supplement. They're particularly popular on performance vehicles and modified cars.

Motorcycle Number Plates

Motorcycle plates in the UK must be:

  • Width: 228mm (9 inches)
  • Height: 178mm (7 inches)
  • Format: Characters displayed over two lines

These dimensions are specified in Schedule 2 of the Display Regulations. Motorcycle plates are rear-only — motorbikes do not require a front plate.

Square/Rear Plates for 4x4s and Imports

Some vehicles — particularly 4x4s, Japanese imports, and American vehicles — have a rear plate recess designed for a square plate rather than the standard oblong.

  • Width: 279mm (11 inches)
  • Height: 203mm (8 inches)
  • Format: Characters displayed over two lines

Square plates are legal for rear use only. The front plate must still be standard oblong format.

Character Size Requirements

Regardless of plate size, all characters must meet these DVLA specifications:

  • Character height: 79mm
  • Character width: 50mm (except "1" and "I")
  • Stroke width: 14mm
  • Space between characters: 11mm
  • Space between groups: 33mm
  • Top/bottom margin: 11mm minimum
  • Side margin: 11mm minimum

Which Size Should You Choose?

  • Standard (520x111mm) — suitable for most vehicles and registrations
  • Short plate — ideal for short or personalised registrations for a cleaner look
  • Hex plate — for drivers who want a unique, modern background pattern
  • Motorcycle — required for all motorbikes
