3D number plates: what they are and what they cost

Plate Guides · 8 October 2026 · 4 min read

Domed, glossy letters that catch the light. A plain-English guide to 3D gel plates from the people who pour them.

What "3D" means

A 3D number plate has raised characters made from a clear polyurethane resin, usually called gel. The black letter is printed first, then the resin is laid over it so it domes up and catches the light. From a step back it looks like the letters are sitting proud of the plate.

Yes, when the letters are solid black, the font is Charles Wright, and the spacing and sizes follow BS AU 145e. Our are gel number plates legal post covers the details.

How long they last

Good resin stays clear for years. Cheap gel goes cloudy or yellow in sunlight. Wash with plain water and a soft cloth and avoid jet-washing the edges at close range.

Fitting

Use sticky pads, not screws. Drilling through gel can crack the dome around the hole. See how to fit number plates.
