Short Number Plates UK: Rules, Sizes & Who Can Have Them (2026)

Plate Legality · 14 March 2026 · 5 min read

Short number plates are legal in the UK but only for certain registrations. Here's who qualifies, what sizes are available, and the rules you need to follow.

Short Number Plates UK — Rules & Sizes

Short number plates (also called narrow plates) are smaller than the standard 520mm x 111mm plate. They're legal in the UK, but there are specific rules about who can use them and what sizes are permitted.

What Is a Short Number Plate?

A short number plate is any plate that is narrower than the standard 520mm width. The height remains the same (111mm), but the plate is trimmed to fit the actual width of the characters plus the required margins.

Short plates are popular because they look cleaner and more proportional on many vehicles — especially sports cars, imported cars, and vehicles with small plate recesses.

Who Can Have Short Number Plates?

Anyone can have a short plate — but only if their registration is short enough. The plate must still maintain:

  • 11mm margins on all sides
  • 11mm spacing between characters
  • 33mm group gap between the fourth and fifth characters
  • 79mm character height with 14mm stroke width

This means a 7-character registration like AB26 CDE will be wider than a 5-character plate like A1 BCE. The plate width is determined by the number of characters, not by personal preference.

Registration LengthExampleApproximate Plate Width

5 charactersA1 BCD~405mm
4 charactersA1 BC~340mm
3 characters1 AB~270mm
2 charactersA 1~200mm

These are approximate — the exact width depends on which characters are used, since the number 1 and letter I are narrower than other characters.

Yes — short plates are fully road legal as long as they meet BS AU 145e standards:

  • Correct Charles Wright 2001 font
  • Correct character dimensions (79mm height, 50mm width, 14mm stroke)
  • Correct spacing (11mm between characters, 33mm group gap)
  • Minimum 11mm margins on all edges
  • BS AU 145e mark and supplier details
  • White reflective front, yellow reflective rear

Can I Make My Standard Plate Shorter?

No. You cannot reduce the spacing or margins to make a 7-character plate fit a shorter size. The character dimensions and spacing are fixed by law. If your registration has 7 characters, your plate must be the full standard width.

Some drivers try to use illegal spacing tricks to shorten their plate — this is a £1,000 fine offence and will fail an MOT.

Short Plates and Plate Styles

Short plates are available in all styles:

  • Standard printed — the most affordable option
  • 3D Gel — raised, glossy characters
  • 4D — sharp laser-cut acrylic (3mm or 5mm)
  • 4D Gel — the premium combination

Do Short Plates Need Different Fitting?

No — short plates use the same fitting methods as standard plates. Adhesive pads or screws both work. The plate is simply narrower, so you'll need fewer adhesive pads.
