Replacement number plates: how to get new ones made

Buying Guide · 10 October 2026 · 4 min read

Cracked in a car park, stolen off the drive or just faded. What you need to replace a plate legally, and how to do it without paying dealer prices.

You don't need the dealer

Any registered number plate supplier can make you a replacement. The dealer badge on your old plate doesn't mean they're the only ones allowed to. A replacement from us is made to the same standard, BS AU 145e, as the one that came on the car.

What you'll need

Every road-legal plate in the UK needs two things from you:

  • Proof of identity. Driving licence, passport or similar.
  • Proof you're entitled to the registration. Your V5C logbook, the green V5C/2 slip, or a certificate of entitlement.

You order first and upload photos of the documents afterwards. We check them before anything goes into production. More detail in what documents do I need for number plates.

If the plate was stolen

Report it to the police first and get a crime reference number. Stolen plates get cloned onto other cars, and the reference protects you if fines or speeding tickets start turning up. Then order replacements as normal.

One plate or both?

You can replace just the front or just the rear. If the other plate is old and yellowed, it's worth doing both so they match, but it isn't required. See do front and rear number plates have to match.
