Importing a car to the UK? Here's how to get it registered, what number plates you need, and the DVLA process for imported vehicles.

Number Plates for Imported Cars — UK Guide

If you're importing a car into the UK — whether from Europe, Japan, the USA, or anywhere else — you'll need to get it registered with the DVLA and fitted with legal UK number plates before driving it on public roads. Here's the complete process for 2026.

Can I Drive an Imported Car on Foreign Plates?

Temporarily, yes. If you're a visitor or have just imported the vehicle, you can drive on foreign plates for up to 6 months in any 12-month period, provided:

  • The vehicle is registered and taxed in its country of origin
  • You have valid insurance for UK roads
  • You are not a permanent UK resident (residents must register within 14 days of importing)

After this period — or immediately if you're a UK resident — the car must be registered with the DVLA and fitted with UK plates.

Step-by-Step: Registering an Imported Car

Step 1 — Get the vehicle through customs

When the vehicle arrives in the UK, you'll need to pay any applicable:

  • Import duty — typically 6.5% for cars from non-EU countries (since Brexit, EU imports may also attract duty depending on rules of origin)
  • VAT — 20% on the vehicle's value plus shipping costs
  • Complete a C384 customs declaration

Step 2 — Get an MOT (if the vehicle is over 3 years old)

Vehicles over 3 years old need a valid MOT certificate before they can be registered. Book an MOT at any approved testing station.

Step 3 — IVA or MSVA test (if applicable)

Depending on the vehicle's origin and type, you may need an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) test. This confirms the vehicle meets UK safety and environmental standards. IVA is typically required for:

  • Vehicles not previously registered in the UK or EU
  • Kit cars, rebuilt vehicles, or radically altered imports
  • Vehicles imported from non-EU countries without type approval

Some vehicles are exempt — check the DVLA guidance on vehicle approval.

Step 4 — Apply to the DVLA for registration

Apply using the V55/5 form (application to register an imported vehicle). You'll need:

  • Proof of identity (passport or driving licence)
  • Foreign registration document
  • Customs documentation (C384 / import duty receipt)
  • MOT certificate (if applicable)
  • IVA certificate (if applicable)
  • Insurance cover note for the vehicle
  • Payment for first-year vehicle tax

Step 5 — Receive your registration and V5C

The DVLA will issue a UK registration number and your V5C registration certificate. This typically takes 2–4 weeks.

Step 6 — Order your UK number plates

Once you have your registration number and V5C (or V5C/2 receipt), you can order plates from a DVLA-registered supplier like Limitless Plates.

What Documents Do I Need to Order Plates?

As with any plate order, you'll need:

  • Proof of identity — driving licence or passport
  • Proof of entitlement — V5C, V5C/2, or DVLA assignment letter

Plate Styles for Imported Cars

Imported cars — especially JDM, American muscle, and European exotics — look fantastic with premium plates:

  • 4D plates — sharp, modern look that suits Japanese and European imports
  • 3D gel plates — glossy finish ideal for classic and luxury imports
  • Short plates — if your imported registration is short, we'll make the plate to the exact legal width

Important Notes

  • You cannot display foreign plates alongside UK plates — once registered, only UK plates should be displayed
  • The registration the DVLA assigns is permanent — you cannot choose your number (unless you purchase a personalised registration separately)
  • All plates must be BS AU 145e compliant regardless of the vehicle's origin
