Which flags can you have on a UK number plate?
Plate Legality · 7 October 2026 · 3 min read
Union flag, Saltire, Red Dragon or nothing at all. The badges you're allowed, and the ones that will get you stopped.
The allowed list
On the left-hand side of the plate you can have one of these, with an optional identifier underneath:
| Flag | Identifiers allowed |
|---|---|
| Union flag | UK |
| Cross of Saint George | ENG, England |
| Saltire | SCO, Scotland |
| Red Dragon of Wales | CYM, Cymru, Wales |
You can also have no flag at all. That's perfectly legal.
Driving abroad
Since 2021 you need a UK identifier to drive in most of Europe without a separate sticker. GB and the EU-style GB badge are no longer valid abroad. A Union flag with UK covers you.
The green flash
Zero-emission cars can have a green strip on the left. It can't go on hybrids. See green number plates for EVs. We check the vehicle before we make one.
What's not allowed
Football club crests, sports logos, other countries' flags and anything decorative. Those are show-plate only.

All of the legal flags are in the plate builder under badges.
