Green Number Plates for Electric Cars: UK Rules & Benefits 2026
Plate News · 25 February 2026 · 5 min read
Electric vehicles in the UK can display a green flash on their front plate. Here's what it means, who qualifies, and what benefits green plates unlock.
Green Number Plates for Electric Cars — UK Guide
Since December 2020, zero-emission vehicles in the UK have been able to display a distinctive green flash on their front number plate. Here's everything you need to know about green number plates in 2026.
What Is a Green Number Plate?
A green number plate features a green stripe on the left-hand side of the front plate. This vertical flash identifies the vehicle as a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) — meaning it produces no tailpipe CO2 emissions.
The green element is added to the front plate only. The rear plate remains standard yellow with no green marking.
Who Qualifies for a Green Number Plate?
Only fully electric vehicles qualify. This includes:
- Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) — e.g., Tesla Model 3, Nissan Leaf, BMW iX
- Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles — e.g., Toyota Mirai, Hyundai Nexo
The following vehicles do not qualify:
- Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) — they have a combustion engine and produce tailpipe emissions
- Mild hybrids — not zero-emission
- Range-extender EVs — if they have any combustion component
The vehicle must be registered with the DVLA as a zero-emission vehicle. Your V5C will show the fuel type.
Is It Compulsory?
No. Displaying a green flash is entirely optional. You can drive a fully electric car with standard plates if you prefer. There is no penalty for not displaying the green element.
What Are the Benefits?
The green plate scheme was introduced by the UK Government to provide visible identification of clean vehicles, enabling local incentives:
- Free or discounted parking — some councils offer free EV parking in green-plate bays
- Bus lane access — certain areas allow EVs in bus lanes (check local signage)
- Clean Air Zone exemptions — cities like Birmingham, Bath, and Bristol exempt ZEVs from charges
- Congestion Charge discount — in London, ZEVs registered for the Cleaner Vehicle Discount can drive free in the zone
The benefits vary by council and region, so check your local authority's policies.
How to Order Green Number Plates
At Limitless Plates, you can add the green EV flash to any front plate during the design process:
- Open our plate builder
- Enter your registration number
- Select your plate style — standard, 3D gel, 4D, or 4D gel
- Choose the EV Green Flash badge option
- Complete your order
The green flash is applied to the front plate only, as per government specifications.
Are Green Plates Legal?
Yes — green number plates are fully road legal under BS AU 145e. The green flash is an officially approved addition to the standard plate format. However, only zero-emission vehicles may display them. Putting a green flash on a petrol or diesel car could result in penalties.
Can PHEVs Get Green Plates?
No. The scheme is strictly for zero-emission vehicles. Even if your PHEV can drive 50+ miles on electric only, it still has a combustion engine and does not qualify. The DVLA and Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) have been clear on this since the scheme launched.
Green Plates and Plate Styles
The green flash works with all plate styles:
| Style | Green Flash Compatible? |
|---|---|
| Standard printed | ✅ Yes |
| 3D Gel | ✅ Yes |
| 4D | ✅ Yes |
| 4D Gel | ✅ Yes |
The flash is applied as a separate element on the left side of the front plate, before the registration characters.
Summary
Green number plates are a free, optional way to identify your electric vehicle and unlock local benefits like free parking and Clean Air Zone exemptions. Design your green EV plates with Limitless Plates — choose your style, add the green flash, and we'll dispatch same-day.
