Number plate borders: are they legal?

Plate Legality · 5 October 2026 · 3 min read

A thin border can finish a plate off nicely. Here's what's allowed and what isn't.

Yes, with limits

A border is allowed on a UK road-legal plate. It has to be a single, solid, non-reflective line, and it must not get in the way of the characters or reduce the margins the law sets.

The rules in practice

  • Colour. Black is the safe choice and the most popular. It must not be patterned.
  • Position. Around the edge, outside the 11 mm margin from the characters.
  • Text. No slogans or website names inside the border on a road-legal plate, apart from the supplier and standard marks.

Borders on short and hex plates

On smaller plates there's less room, so the border sits closer to the edge. The builder handles this for you. See short number plates UK rules and are hex plates legal.

Try it

Switch the border on and off in the plate builder and see which you prefer.
