Are carbon fibre number plates legal?

Plate Legality · 6 October 2026 · 3 min read

Carbon backgrounds and carbon-effect letters are popular online. Here's what you can actually drive with.

Short answer

A carbon background is not legal on a UK road. The plate has to be reflective white on the front and reflective yellow on the rear. Carbon-effect letters aren't legal either, because characters must be solid black.

Why

BS AU 145e is built around contrast. Cameras and people need dark letters on a bright reflective background. Carbon weave cuts that contrast, so it's an MOT fail and a possible £100 fine. See number plate fines in the UK.

What you can do legally

  • 4D acrylic letters give a sharp, premium look that's fully legal. See what is a 4D number plate.
  • A black border around the plate is allowed.
  • A legal flag on the left.

Carbon as a show plate

If it's for a show car, display or off-road use, a carbon plate is fine as a show plate. It just can't go on the road.
