Show Plate vs Road Legal Number Plate: What's the Difference?
Plate Legality · 28 June 2025 · 4 min read
Show plates and road legal plates look almost identical — but there's a very important legal difference. Here's what you need to know before buying.
Show Plate vs Road Legal Number Plate — What's the Difference?
If you've been shopping for number plates online, you've probably seen the option to buy a "show plate" — often at a lower price with no document verification required. But what exactly is a show plate, and is it legal to use on a public road?
What Is a Show Plate?
A show plate is a number plate that is manufactured for display purposes only — typically for car shows, photoshoots, private land, motorsport events, or garage decoration. They are not intended to be displayed on a vehicle used on public roads.
Because they're not road-use items, show plate suppliers are not required to verify your identity or entitlement to the registration. This is why you can order them without a V5C or driving licence — and why they're sometimes cheaper.
Show plates may also be manufactured outside BS AU 145e specifications:
- Non-standard fonts or spacing
- Novelty backgrounds or colours
- No DVLA registered supplier mark
- Different character sizes
What Is a Road Legal Number Plate?
A road legal plate is manufactured by a DVLA-registered number plate supplier (RNPS) and meets every requirement of BS AU 145e. It is legal to display on a vehicle used on public roads in the UK.
To buy a road legal plate, the supplier must:
- Verify your proof of identity (driving licence or passport)
- Verify your proof of entitlement (V5C, V750, V778, etc.)
- Display their DVLA supplier mark (registered postcode and trading name) on every plate
- Use correct Charles Wright 2001 font, character sizes, and spacing
Can I Use a Show Plate on a Public Road?
No. Using a show plate on a public road is illegal and carries penalties including:
- Up to a £1,000 fine
- Points on your licence (if the plate obscures or alters your registration)
- MOT failure
- Vehicle being seized in serious cases
Even if the show plate displays a registration number you're legitimately entitled to, it still cannot be used on a public road if it doesn't meet BS AU 145e or wasn't made by a registered supplier.
How Can I Tell the Difference?
Road legal plates always display:
- A BS AU 145e mark (usually printed in small text at the bottom of the plate)
- The supplier's name and postcode (registered with DVLA)
- The British Standard mark (e.g., "BS AU 145e")
If a plate doesn't have these markings, it's almost certainly a show plate and should not be used on a public road.
Why Do People Buy Show Plates?
Legitimate reasons include:
- Car show displays — displaying a personalised plate you intend to buy, before completing the DVLA process
- Garage decoration — framing a meaningful registration on the wall
- Photoshoots — filming or photographing a vehicle with a custom registration
- Track days on private land — plates on track vehicles don't always need to be BS AU 145e compliant
