Can You Have Tinted Number Plates in the UK? Law & Fines Explained
Plate Legality · 20 February 2026 · 5 min read
Tinted and carbon-effect number plates look great, but are they legal on UK roads? Here's what the law says about tinted plates in 2026.
Can You Have Tinted Number Plates in the UK?
No — tinted number plates are not road legal in the UK. Any plate with tinted, smoked, or carbon-effect characters or backgrounds does not meet the BS AU 145e standard required for road use.
What Does the Law Say?
Under the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001, number plate characters must be:
- Solid black on both front (white) and rear (yellow) plates
- Printed, raised, or applied onto an approved retroreflective background
- Free from any coating, tinting, or treatment that reduces contrast or reflectivity
Any deviation — including carbon-fibre effect, grey tinting, smoked covers, or coloured characters — makes the plate illegal for road use.
What Are the Penalties?
Driving with tinted or non-compliant plates can result in:
- A £1,000 fine issued by the police
- An MOT failure — testers are required to check plate compliance under DVSA guidance
- A vehicle seizure in extreme cases, particularly if the plate appears designed to avoid ANPR detection
- Points on your licence in some circumstances
What About Tinted Plate Covers?
Plastic covers or overlays that sit over your plate — even clear ones — are also illegal. The regulations prohibit any material that could affect the plate's reflectivity. Tinted covers specifically reduce the infrared reflectivity that ANPR cameras rely on.
Legal Alternatives That Still Look Premium
If you want a premium look without breaking the law, consider:
- 4D Number Plates — laser-cut acrylic characters give a bold, modern look with solid black characters that are fully legal
- 4D Gel Plates — combine sharp acrylic edges with a glossy gel topcoat for the ultimate finish
- 3D Gel Plates — raised, domed characters with a high-gloss shine
- Plate Borders — add a black or carbon-style surround for extra definition without affecting legality
All our plates at Limitless Plates are manufactured with solid black characters on approved retroreflective backgrounds — fully BS AU 145e compliant.
Can I Use Tinted Plates at Car Shows?
On private land (car shows, exhibitions, track days), there are no restrictions on plate appearance. Many show plates feature tinted, coloured, or custom designs for display purposes only. However, you must not drive on public roads with non-compliant plates. Read more about the difference in our guide: Show Plates vs Road Legal Plates.
Summary
Tinted plates are illegal for road use in the UK. The penalties are significant, and they will fail an MOT. For a legal premium upgrade, design your plates with Limitless Plates — choose from 3D gel, 4D, or 4D gel for a standout look that's fully road legal.
