Can You Change Number Plates on a Finance Car? PCP, HP & Lease Rules
Plate Legality · 10 February 2026 · 5 min read
Want to put custom plates on a car you're still paying for? Here's what PCP, HP, and lease agreements say about changing number plates.
Can You Change Number Plates on a Finance Car?
If your car is on PCP, HP, or a lease, you might be wondering whether you're allowed to change the number plates or add a private registration. The answer depends on your finance type and what exactly you want to do.
Replacing Physical Plates (Same Registration)
Yes — you can always replace the physical plates on a financed or leased car with new ones in a different style (e.g., upgrading from standard to 4D or 3D gel), as long as:
- The plates display the same registration number currently assigned to the vehicle
- The plates are BS AU 145e compliant
- You provide valid documents to the plate supplier
This applies to all finance types — PCP, HP, and lease. You're simply replacing the physical plates, not changing the registration.
Adding a Private Registration to a Finance Car
This is where it gets more complex:
Hire Purchase (HP)
With HP, you're the registered keeper of the vehicle. You can usually transfer a private registration to the car via the DVLA's online service without needing permission from the finance company. However, it's good practice to inform them.
Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)
With PCP, the finance company owns the vehicle until you make the final balloon payment. Most PCP agreements require you to get written permission from the finance provider before transferring a private plate to or from the vehicle. Contact your finance company first — many will approve it but want to be notified.
Personal Contract Hire (PCH) / Lease
With a lease, you do not own the vehicle and typically cannot change the registration number. The vehicle must be returned with its original registration at the end of the contract. Some lease companies allow it with permission, but this is uncommon.
What Happens at the End of Finance?
If you've added a private registration to a PCP or HP car and decide not to buy the vehicle:
- You must remove the private plate before handing the car back
- Apply to the DVLA to retain your registration on a V778 retention certificate (costs £80)
- The car reverts to its original registration
If you forget to remove the private plate before returning the car, you could lose the registration.
Our Advice
- Replacing plates with a premium style like 4D or 3D gel? Go ahead — no permission needed, just order your plates with the existing registration
- Adding a private registration? Check with your finance provider first, especially on PCP and lease
- End of finance? Don't forget to retain your private plate before handing the car back
