What is a registered number plate supplier?

Buying Guide · 2 October 2026 · 3 min read

Only DVLA-registered suppliers can make road-legal plates. Here's how to check who you're buying from.

The basics

In England and Wales, anyone making road-legal number plates must be on the DVLA's Register of Number Plate Suppliers (RNPS). It's there to stop cloned plates being made for stolen cars.

How to spot a proper supplier

  • They ask for documents. ID and proof of entitlement, such as your V5C. See what documents do I need.
  • Their name is on the plate. Every legal plate shows the supplier's name and postcode at the bottom.
  • They follow BS AU 145e. Correct font, size and spacing, with no shortcuts.

Warning signs

  • No document check
  • Letters closed up or moved around to spell names
  • Tinted or carbon plates sold as "road legal"

Our process

We're a UK manufacturer. You build your plate online, upload your documents, we check them, then make and dispatch your plates. Read what happens after you order.
